Recent NHS data indicates that nearly 60% of patients with the 13 most common cancers in England are now diagnosed at stages one or two when treatment is more effective. This improvement is attributed to NHS initiatives like the Lung Health Check and Liver Health Programmes, which deploy mobile scanning units to community locations such as shopping centres and supermarket car parks. Since its inception in 2019, the Lung Health Check programme has led to over 5,000 early lung cancer diagnoses. Dame Cally Palmer, NHS England’s National Cancer Director, emphasised the importance of early detection in saving lives and reaffirmed the NHS’s commitment to further enhancing early diagnosis rates.
